Your opinion on HAES?

What is your opinion on the Health at Every Size (HAES) movement?  For those who don’t know, it’s basically about promoting the idea that people in all shapes and sizes can be healthy.  A person’s health is independent of their weight. There’s a whole online community that’s sprung up around it.

I think the HAES community has helped with some things.  I appreciate the notion that all sizes are beautiful and that as a society, we shouldn’t be fat shaming others.  However, I don’t agree at all that health comes in every size.  Even if a heavy person manages to escape heart problems, being overweight puts unnecessary strain on the muscles and joints.  That causes more pain over time.

I think most of the HAES influencers are under 40, so it’s no surprise that they feel healthy, stay active, and even receive excellent routine lab results.  It’s often in the 40s and 50s that wear and tear on the body starts to show and health suffers due to the lifestyle.  I don’t think the HAES paints a realistic picture.

HAES has helped push body positivity which I think can help change society’s view of obese people; however, sometimes it feels like the HAES community isn’t that accepting.  I’ve been shamed by the hive mind before for seeking weight-loss surgery and for wanting to change my body.  I feel like there’s pressure to not admit that my health suffers because of my obesity too.
