Why nothing to drink with meals?

I keep reading that I’m not supposed to drink anything during mealtimes after having weight-loss surgery.  Why is that?  Is that a rule I’m meant to stick by just while I’m recovering from surgery, for the time I’m on the bariatric diet, or for the remainder of my life?  It seems counterintuitive to me.  Isn’t it hard to eat without anything to wash it down?

Your stomach needs all the nutrients it can get, so if you drink with your meal, you will flush it down too quickly. Also, water just fills your stomach unnecessarily.

What Ludmilla says is right. You need to wait after your food to let your stomach absorb all the nutrients. But also, as you will notice the food just takes a bit longer to go down, so if you drink right away it may feel like your drink just sits on top of your food. It’s not a great feeling!
