Why must I lose weight before surgery?

It’s incredibly difficult to follow a diet and exercise program.  I feel like I’m being asked to lose an unreasonable amount and I’m really struggling to stick with it.  Why is it necessary for me to lose weight before my surgery?

I was told the pre-op low fat diet was to shrink the liver to reduce the risk of complications during the surgery.

I was told the same thing.  I was also told that the strict diet after surgery must be followed or it can be detrimental to your health.  So pre-surgery, dieting is meant to prepare patients for what’s to come and to make sure there’s enough willpower there to make it through the diet phases after surgery, especially the liquid phase.

That’s what my team told me as well. I was also frustrated that I had to suffer so much before the surgery (I thought it would only begin after the procedure). It’s probably an indirect way of telling us to change our bad habits and get used to the new style.

Which part is the most unreasonable for you, Emma?

@Misty62, I guess it’s not exactly unreasonable, but it feels like a difficult request to manage.  If I could lose weight through diet and exercise, then I wouldn’t need the surgery.  I have PCOS which makes it tougher to get the weight off.  I’m just feeling scared and whiny and I can’t reach for food when in the past that’s how I always comforted myself.

I’m sorry that you seem to go through a hard time. I believe the surgery is also a way to force ourselves to reach out beyond food and find something else to comfort ourselves. I’m sure stress eating is one of the reasons behind my weight gain. I hope you’ll be able to find something else soon!

It is for our benefit to follow a strict diet program, but I don’t know about the exercise program. If these two programs will make us fit, then why would we need to have the sleeve surgery?

How much did they ask you to lose, and how much percentage of your body are they asking?

on August 4, 2019

I’m about 300 lbs. and they asked me to lose around 10% so I need to drop 30 lbs. or so.  It didn’t sound like I have to hit that number exactly, but that’s what I’m supposed  to aim for.  I’m working on it, but losing weight is tough.  That’s why I want to have the surgery in the first place.
