Who do you listen to?

Before and after my surgery I have come across many different medical professionals, from nutritionists to surgeons and from nurses to psychologists and it seems like everybody has their own opinions on how to “do it”. Have you had contradicting advice from medical professionals and who do you trust the most?

Medicine is a practice, and doctors often have differing opinions on things. I would listen to whomever you feel you can trust the most. I am listening to my surgeon and the nutritionist he recommended.

It doesn’t matter to whom you talk to, provided they are competent and give the right information. There will always be conflicting information, and the internet offers another avenue for the ‘confusion’ to thrive. Above all, you have to be inquisitive and get all the details from whoever you choose to consult. A real professional should be able to debunk myths and misleading information.

I listen to the doctors who know me and have provided me with medical care for years.  I haven’t had surgery yet, but when I do, I’ll listen to the surgeons who operated on me.  A lot of medical advice is based on the individual person since different diseases and medications can war with other diseases and medications.  A person’s body might also respond differently to various treatments.  So, I trust the one who has seen me, read my medical information, and is responsible for my health.  Plus, I can ask those professionals some questions which boosts my confidence in their abilities.

My surgeon told me to stay away from fruit even. My nutritionists (who actually works closely with him) told me not to listen to him, because he doesn’t know what he is talking about. I thought it was a bit harsh to never eat an orange but he was adement. I guess I will have to make my own decision here.

I listen to my nutritionist who has proven she is competent. I know there will always be conflicting opinions and information out there. I’ve been seeing my nutritionist for a long time. She knows me well, and I feel like I can really trust her.
