What did you try before surgery?

I get asked this one fairly often and it was one of the questions most of us had to answer on our insurance forms.  I’m pretty curious as to what other methods people tried prior to surgery because so many things failed to work long-term for me.  I tried everything from Weight Watchers to over-the-counter diet pills. What did you try before committing to weight-loss surgery?

I think we’re supposed to try everything before the surgery since it’s like the last bullet in our guns. I exercised, went to a dietician, took drugs, stopped eating this food or that drink, tried to avoid stress, and so on.

Maybe some things are just not meant to be.

I went to Camp Shane (fat camp) as a teen.  I lost weight while I was there and kept it off for several months, but then I got dumped by my boyfriend and drowned my tears in ice cream. Young love was serious stuff back then.  Once I got off the diet, I found it impossible to recommit to healthy eating.  That was years ago, but I’m still an emotional eater.

I’m a little jealous of your Camp Shane experience.  I always wanted to go there as a kid.  I remember when it was featured on MTV’s True Life and Made. I’d  be oddly devastated had you not lost weight for the program because it was such a dream of mine to go.  It was incredibly expensive though, and no amount of slinging burgers at McDonald’s was going to cover it.

Speaking of diet pills, I took some that were supposedly recommended by Dr. Oz. It was back when apple cider vinegar was the new miracle “drug” when it came to curbing your appetite and losing weight.  I wound up with the worst acid reflux from taking those things and it lingered for ages.  I also tried SlimFast shakes a couple years ago.  They’re only good for losing weight in the short-term in my opinion.  I gained the weight right back as soon as I started eating regular meals again.

Different types of diet strategies, diet pills, gym workout, and electronic gadgets that supposedly burn the fats even while I was sitting down. I think the surgery will be my last resort to becoming slimmer.
