Warn party host?

Do you typically let the party host know beforehand that you’ve had weight-loss surgery and can only eat very small meals?  I hate to waste their food and I don’t want the host to feel like his meal isn’t tasty if I don’t clean my plate like I used to do.  I also don’t want to draw attention to myself.  What do you usually do?

Did you get a formal invite?  Most of those include a line about informing the host/hostess about any allergies or dietary restrictions you have.  Just include the info with your RSVP.

I don’t think there’s anything to worry about, but I guess you could warn the host when you RSVP.  If the host is a friend, he’s likely to know you’ve had weight-loss surgery and won’t take offense to your small intake.  However, I wouldn’t expect the host to serve me a smaller portion if the food is plated.  That would draw attention to your eating habits and most hosts will avoid that. I don’t make it a habit to waste, but it’s just one of those things that happens when you aren’t in control of the food.

I guess it depends on the situation for me. If it’s a friend who’s having the party, I’d tell them about my dietary restrictions. If you receive a formal invite asking about restrictions, then certainly let the host/hostess know. But if it’s just a casual thing, I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

It depends on who the host is. If I knew them, I let them know beforehand. If I don’t, I don’t feel like it really is their business. I’ve left food on my plate plenty of times but people don’t ask questions as much as you may think.
