Pre-op Exercising/Calories

2 on November 26, 2019

I start my pre-op diet within the next five days or so and I will be at 800 calories per day. I am a sports official and have a game scheduled within that time frame so I’m wondering if it is safe to still do this as it burns a lot of calories as you can imagine. Do I increase my calories to compensate for the loss? My bariatric team seems pretty stern about the diet which I definitely understand, but I also plan on doing other things to stay in shape. Just wondering if anybody else faced this same thing.

I think you are the one that can decide best on whether or not you will be able to do your job. Listen to your body, don’t overdo it, if you feel like you cannot function well on 800 calories. The pre-op diet (for us anyway) was not just for weight loss, it was also to cleanse your “insides”, so I wouldn’t up your calories too much. Maybe ask your team what they think.

Stick with the diet.  It’s necessary to shrink your liver so surgery will be safer.  Your body will be okay with 800 calories, even if you’re super active at the time.  We actually don’t burn as many calories through sports and exercising as we tend to think and your body can always use its fat reserves for energy if need be.  Good luck!  I hope you’ll let us know how it went.
