Post-Surgery Happy Hours

Before I had surgery, I used to enjoy going out with friends for a drink on Friday nights after work. However, since my surgery, it is really rare that I drink alcohol. Alcohol contains empty calories, and I find that it affects me a lot faster than it did before.

This doesn’t stop me from going out with my friends, though. I just order a glass of iced tea or something instead of an alcoholic drink. I can enjoy the company of my friends without an adult beverage.

I agree that it is possible to enjoy adult company but still avoid adult drinks. It feels like you are close friends that have come a long way. Again, this points to the various changes that we incorporate into our lifestyle, after surgery. At times, it becomes hard to adjust.

I was advised to try everything, because everyone responds differently to things. I have tried beer and it went fine, but I have tried some stronger liquor and it didn’t go over well, so I know to stay away from it.

Our bodies indeed have different response mechanisms, and I guess it is much easier for you than the rest. Are there certain foods, beverages and drinks (apart from strong liquor) that you stay away from now?

I would suggest I post op to let beer go a little flat before consumption same with soda pop, likely a Bud/Coors higher and craft beer not suggested -won’t be a big deal in a sleeve patient.

However hard liquor…I had 1shot and hit the floor. It dropped me. I would try at home before a bar because of this, also it wouldn’t be advised for RNY…dumping syndrome could happen.

Lastly…transference is common in wls. Reminder this is LIQUID SUGAR. WE CAN TAKE IN A LOT AND OUR METABOLISM IS HiGH running right now. And we get 2 payoffs emotionally. Make sure coping skills are reviewed a bit.

I enjoy an occasional beer, so it’ll be tough on me if I end up not being able to drink it at all post-op. I don’t drink very often, but I do like to have a beer every so often with the guys when we watch a football game. We’ll see what happens. It won’t be the end of the world if I can’t drink beer post-op, but I hope I still can.

This will be interesting for me as well. I really enjoy a glass of wine after work, or on the weekends with my friends, but I will have to let this go for a while. I am hoping grape juice in a wine glass will do the trick for a while.
