Nausea and vomiting

Hi, I’m 7 weeks post sleeve surgery now but still feel nauseous all the time and cannot tolerate anything that isn’t really soft like soup or soft pasta/scrambled eggs etc anything I’ve tried just makes me vomit straight after or within 20 mins. I eat slowly taking approx 30 mins and chew everything until its non existent practically. Fluid all seems ok and I can drink a 300ml cup of tea no problems. I called the hospital dietician to ask advice and all the said was make sure I’m taking omeprazole every day which I am. Has anyone else had this and when will I be able to actually have a proper meal albeit small. I’m struggling to get my protein in so drinking milk to compensate. I can only manage 50g of anything let alone 50g protein plus veg, I just cant eat that much. Advice please?

Hi there Loopy. Your system may have used to eating a soft diet and is adjusting to solid food. You did mention pasta and scrambled eggs, was the recipe prepared with vegetable oil? You need to use a minimal amount of oil in your food as much as possible. If you can avoid it totally, then that will be best for you.

Hi. No I never use oil in cooking anything and havent done for years. Boil pasta and dry fry lean steak mince then a tomatoes based plain pasta sauce. It’s the only proper meal I can keep down. 😕

Have you tried protein shake? It worked fine with me when I had a similar experience as Loopy. It may not taste good, but I thought of the nutrients I will get from that shake. However, I would still recommend that you ask your doctor about this before trying anything new.

Hiya. I have spoken to the specialist nurse yesterday and as I have my check up appointment on tuesday she will go over everything I’ve been eating (I’ve kept a food diary) and if need be get the surgeon to come see me to to make sure nothing is wrong. Will update when seen them x thanks for all the support x x

Loopy12a, how did your follow-up visit go?  I believe it was today, right?  I hope they can help you get things sorted out.  Are you taking any medication for the nausea?  In your shoes, I’d eat one food at a time and see how I did with it.  So just boiled eggs.  Then just beans.  Then just yogurt.  Try not to add spices or anything and see how it goes.

Hi jasmine99, seen surgeon he has requested a barium xray and also an endoscopy under a general anaesthetic to rule out any complications.
Prob have to wait 6 weeks for the tests tho so increased my omeprazole to 40mg to see if it helps. Thank u for asking x x

I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling so much! I hope your team will be able to help you improve your condition. I’m not sure if our stomach can still swell after two months after surgery.

For food, have you tried yogurt or pureed food (beans, fruits, etc.)?

on August 9, 2019

Hi. I was told not to eat beans or anything that has a ‘shell’s I’m ok with yoghurt but in saying that I decided on yoghurt for my tea last night then spent 2 hours feeling sick. Normally yoghurt is fine but I’ve noticed it’s always the evening 6pm ish meal that makes me feel I’ll regardless of what I have. Breakfast and mid day I seem to be fine generally. I cant fathom why. It’s about 5-6 hours inbetween meals so not too close, I’ve tried just something very small and light but it still does it. I chew well, take my time and go slow. It’s very odd.

Update. I have seen the hospital dieticians today and they said it’s not normal to be as sick as I am so going to send a message to my surgeon for when I see him next week to organise either a barium CT scan or an endoscopy to make sure nothing has done wrong.
She also said it may have been caused by the antibiotics I had for the wound infection. It was ciproxin which made me vomit constantly and feel really I’ll for several days until I stopped it. Apparently this may have caused inflammation along the suture line. So will have to persevere until I see surgeon next week.

I thought you would be seeing your surgeon today. Do they have any ideas on how to make it slightly easier for you until next week?

The timing is strange as well. I mean, if your stomach was still inflamed, the hours wouldn’t matter. Maybe you can go back to the liquid diet for the evening for now, but that must be uncomfortable.

I’m really sorry that you’re going through this. I’m praying that it will get better soon!

Hi, yes I thought I would be able to see the surgeon aa well. Although my official surgeon appointment is next week they told me when I called that when I see the dietician I could Also see the aurgeon. That didn’t happen!
Yes I know what your saying about the timings and inflammation and I agree with you. To be honest I don’t know what’s going on. They sis suggest going back to blended food until I see surgeon on Tuesday. I’m fed up feeling and being sick, it make a me not want to bother eating at all.
Bought some ready made bottle a of slim fast today aa drinking isn’t a problem and it has 25g protein. Thank u for the support. X
