Mixed news on bariatric surgery and pregnancy

I ran across this article discussing how bariatric surgery affects pregnancy.  The obvious benefits are there such as lowering the hypertension and diabetes risk.  However, what I found interesting is that women who conceived near the 12-month mark after surgery saw better pregnancy outcomes than women who conceived at a later date.  That seems strange to me.  Why do you suppose that is?

There is a lot of conflicting information online, and it is always advisable to crosscheck anything you run into with your doctor. Research has shown that pregnancy after weight-loss surgery is safer than the one complicated by obesity. On the other hands, experts recommend postponing pregnancy by at least 12 to 18 months until the weight stabilizes.

That is interesting information. I have read that you shouldn’t get pregnant before 1 to 1,5 years post-op, because your body needs to adjust to the new way of eating. I think there will be conflicting information on this always.

I wonder if that’s because you lose the most weight during your first year after the surgery.  Maybe some of the women got back to their old habits of eating the wrong things and just overeating in general the further away they were from their surgery date. I wish we knew.

I have read that it is advisable to wait for sometime before getting pregnant, but like @BeyondObesity points out, there has to be discipline and dedication post-op. The information in the article is new, and it probably requires to be backed up by research findings.
