Measuring and Counting

I write down everything I eat and drink so I can keep track of my calories. I measure everything to make sure I’m getting the appropriate portion sizes. I’m sure many of you do the same thing.

Do you all ever think we’ll be able to stop doing this? Do you think it will just become intuitive someday or will we always have to be so cautious?

My sleeve gastrectomy procedure was done over a year ago and I usually only weigh or measure my food when I’ve hit a plateau or I’m doing a pouch reset.  Measuring and weighing my food at that point helps me recalibrate my ability to eyeball portions.  I think it becomes intuitive, but I sometimes get off track after a while.

I still measure and weigh my food even though I had surgery ages ago and am at my goal weight.  I like to try new recipes at home so measuring comes naturally anyway.  It doesn’t seem to add more than a minute or two to my routine.  I have gotten better at eyeballing things so that I only have to weigh it once instead of taking a bit out, weighing it again, taking a bit more out, and weighing it again to finally hit the magic number.

Even though I haven’t had my surgery yet, I have started to measure and weigh my food to get into the habit of doing so. I hope it just becomes instinctual after a while, but only time will tell.
