Itching Wound

7 on July 2, 2018

Please help me find a remedy on how to relieve my itching wound. The healing process makes the cut very itchy and it is very irritating. I know I have to inquire my doctor about this, but do you have any suggestions on how to get relief from this problem?

I’ve been there!  My doctors aid I could use anti-itching creams so long as I didn’t get it on the incision.  Of course, when you’re obese that’s problematic because your skin folds up and spreads the cream everywhere.  I had to lay flat on my back to avoid that which is inconvenient as it takes time for the cream to dry.  I used Allegra Intensive Itch Relief and took Benadryl which made it more bearable.

Some people have a serious allergic reaction to the skin closures and tape.  If you get hives or blisters that are spreading you might need to call your doctor immediately.

Thanks for your suggestion Roo. I was thinking of Benadryl, but I am afraid that it might affect the healing process and might cause more problems. Sometimes I just my fingers so that my brain will think more of the pain of the fingers than the itch of the healing wound.

As long as the substance you are applying don’t go directly to the open wound, then I would assume you are safe. Apply whatever you think can ease up the itchiness around the wound and that will soothe the irritation a bit.

It is only almost a week after my surgery, so the pain is still dominant. I was told not to put any gel or cream on the wound if it hasn’t closed up nicely as they may increase the risk of infection. I put ice packs on the area when I can’t stand it anymore which has been helpful so far. I’ll keep Benadryl in mind if I ever need it.

Roo, how long did you have to bear with the itchy wound until it completely subsided?

I never thought about ice packs. I thought a heat compress would suppress the discomfort that we may feel. I will try to this and see how it works for me.

Heat packs are relatively risky for wounds in general because they may cause more injury and delay the healing process. It’s probably going to be fine if you’re sure that the packs are not too hot although I’ve never had it recommended for itchy wounds. I hope it works for you.

What did your doctor tell you?

My doctor did not mention about the warm compress. Now that you mention it, I have to consult my doctor whether what I’m doing will harm me or not. I tried the cold compress and it did soothe me so I’m going to continue doing that.
