Incision site driving me nuts

Hi, I had surgery a few days ago.  I hate to be whiny, but my incision site is driving me nuts.  It’s so itchy and irritated.  Can I take an antihistamine?  Also, I’m getting another itchy spot on my torso.  It’s turning into a spot.  What’s going on with my body?  I’ve already called the doc’s office three times to ask other silly questions so I hate to call him again.

You poor dear!  I hope you feel better soon!  I haven’t had surgery yet, so I can’t offer any help with your problems, but don’t hesitate to call your doctor’s office as many times as you need to.  They’re there to help and I’m sure they’d rather you call them than for you to worry and be uncomfortable.

Don’t worry because being bothered is part of a doctor’s job. Itchiness is part of the healing process, and I know how it feels. You can tap or rub with a soft cloth the area around the incision. Never scratch the incision area as the fingernails carry germs that might infect the wound.

I am so with you!!! I had surgery last Thursday and I have to keep pulling up my shirt to see where the steri strips are so I can scratch around them. That is usually a sign of healing so I keep telling myself that lol. Feel better!!

I read from somewhere that applying a heating pad directly will soothe the itchy area. I haven’t tried it yet because I haven’t done the surgery yet. I think there is an ointment or cream that we can apply to lessen the itchiness.

It’s been a while since I’ve had surgery, but I remember how itchy the incision was as it healed. It really drove me nuts!

You should be able to take an antihistamine, but be sure to check with your doctor first. Don’t worry about bothering them. That’s what they are there for. They’d rather have you call with a question than to try and guess what to do.

Thank you guys for the support!  I feel like a whiny baby going through this and that’s not like me. Well, at least I’m handling the diet well.  Anyway, I called the doctor and apparently the itchiness is normal.  He said I could take some Benadryl, but not to overdo it since my stomach is still adjusting.  He cautioned against using any creams around the incision site.  I’ve found that not letting anything touch the incision site helps.  So no blankets for me and I have my shorts pulled low and rolled my shirt halfway up.  So not trendy, but it works for now.
