How young is too young?

A colleague from Arizona sent me this news story about a 13-year-old girl who recently had weight-loss surgery.  I’m surprised that they were willing to perform the operation on a child that young.  Are you?  At what age do you think the line should be drawn?  I’m glad her mother has also had weight-loss surgery so at least she can help her daughter through it.

The teenager has/had a genetic predisposition to obesity, and this probably informed the decision to have her undergo surgery. I remember reading that as a last resort, 13-years old or older girls and 15-years-old or older boys with a BMI of 40 or higher, can undergo surgery. The recommendation usually is that after surgery, they should receive care at an adolescent bariatric surgery center. Her mother must have been such a pillar.

Wow! I don’t know the details of this but 13 sounds really young. There must have been some reason, I would hope. I would think 18 would be an okay age.

Wow, thirteen does sound too young to understand what a lifestyle change she’s agreeing to. I also question whether she fully understood the risks. It is impossible to judge, though.
