How to Cope with Office Holiday Parties?

We’re going to have an office party for the holidays in December. I’m a bit nervous because I haven’t been to an office holiday party since my surgery. I am sure there will be lots of food and alcohol there. How do I deal with this? Will people think it’s odd if I’m not indulging in the food and drink like everyone else?

Do your co-workers know you’ve had weight-loss surgery?  I’m not sure whether they’ll notice, but I know I don’t pay attention to what other people eat.  I’m too busy chatting with everyone and nibbling on goodies myself.  Go and focus on the social aspect, skip the alcohol, and just nibble on what you can.

I guess there a few co-workers who already know that you underwent surgery. They will probably understand your non-indulgence. The rest of them may hardly notice anything.

I feel pretty awkward in big groups and what people were thinking about me would play on my mind too, @Jenny.  I’ve been in counseling to deal with my self-esteem issues and I’ve gradually started to accept that no one is likely concerned with what I’m doing, eating, thinking, or saying. A phrase I repeat to keep things in perspective is, “I’m not a celebrity.”  I recite it in my head when I’m feeling overly anxious.

What you say is true since half of the time, other people are hardly paying attention to us. I wouldn’t mind attending an office party provided I felt comfortable. If at any I felt awkward, I’d simply leave. It will be much easier if your colleagues understand the circumstances.

I haven’t had surgery yet but I think you will be okay just eating bits and pieces here and there. I’ve noticed that people don’t pay as much attention to what you do as you think. Just have fun socializing!
