Decision Making

Your own particular case, who has the final say whether you will go ahead with the surgery or not?

I did not decide for myself to have the surgery. My husband and I both agreed that this is good for me and for both of us. My husband’s parents were not in favor of this, but I’m glad that my husband supported me.

I’m glad that your husband is supportive, Marilee.  I think that helps.  My physician and the insurance company had the final say really, because I couldn’t afford to cover the entire cost of surgery and follow-up care.   I wouldn’t feel comfortable going overseas for surgery, even though I know some people who have had a great outcome after surgery in Mexico.

You are correct that the word of the doctor has a big weight on our decision to push through. And of course, our financial status will determine if we can pay for the procedure. Money speaks as they say.

I’m so glad your husband was supportive!

I discussed my surgery with my family and a couple of close friends.  My parents expressed some concerns, but they told me they’d support whatever decision I made, and they have.  I’m fortunate to have a supportive family to back me up.

I also made the decision with my family.  They had seen me struggle with my weight since childhood, so they were very supportive of my decision to have the surgery.  My mom came to the hospital with me, and my dad joined her once he was off work that day.  They let me stay with them a few days so they could help take care of me while I recovered a little before going back to work.
