Considering a revision

Hi, I joined the forum about a year or so ago, had lap band surgery in September 2018, and I’m now considering a revision.  The lap band surgery went fine, but I’m not happy with the amount of weight I’ve managed to lose and I’ve even started gaining some back. It’s just been a stressful time.  Has anyone else here had a revision?  Will having another surgery really make a difference?

I haven’t had a revision, but I’m curious to know if others have, and if they have, did it help them lose more weight? Have you talked with your surgeon about this? Does he or she think it would help you on your weight-loss journey?

I’m sorry to hear that you haven’t lost as much as you wanted. Do you know the possible reasons? I feel like I won’t be able to go through the surgery more than once, so I would try everything I can to avoid it.

I just wanted to let you know I had the gastric band in 2010. I kept the wait down that I had lost which was no where near goal and it was a struggle to do that. This past week on Thursday I had the band took out and had the sleeve done. I don’t have much to offer you yet, but hopefully I will soon. I don’t regret getting the revision done.

Do you know why you didn’t lose enough weight on the band? It’s just that I’ve heard of a few cases of people removing their bands and switching to sleeve instead, so it sounds like going with the sleeve right from the start is the better option.

I think it’s because you can really get use to slider foods. They are foods that will go past the band and you keep eating till your actual stomach gets full. I went through losing my mom a year after having my band. It sent me to a place where I just wanted to eat. She was my biggest support. Then I finally had pulled my self back together some . By then I was up 60 pds. But was still 80 pounds down from my highest weight. So I decided on the sleeve to keep my weight off and to hopefully lose the rest.

I’m sorry to hear that you had a tough time, Kaye. I hope you’re feeling better now. Does that mean the band is not tight enough that some food can cause to expand? Sleeve changes the shape of the stomach, leaving no way around it anymore, so I suppose it’s much riskier than the band for that reason.

I think it was just easier with the band to keep eating. I’m hopeful that this sleeve will keep me from my emotional eating. I think it will definitely help with that.

Kaye64, thank you so much for replying.  I’m sorry to hear that you lost your mother.  Loss is so hard to deal with and that’s doubly so when it’s your parent.

In the beginning with the band, I did really well.  I actually lost enough weight that I was hoping to have skin removal surgery.  Turns out that it was just wishful thinking.  It took two stressful events to throw me out of wack.  Like you, I’m an emotional eater.  And gaining the weight back threw me into depression which made me want to eat more so it was a never ending cycle. I know it’s not been long, but how are you doing so far since you had the revision? I hope you’re well.

Thank you Too, I’m doing really well so far . I’m down 20 pds and off some of my meds. I won’t lie, I still want to eat but not from being hungry. I think it’s just the food addiction like a drug addict. But it’s something that I will struggle with the rest of my life I know. But I take it one day at a time. I think the surgery was a blessing because if I do have to much of what I can have my stomach will definitely let me know. I’m sorry to here about your struggles with the band as well. I think the band is a good tool but just to easy to get around.

Getting off the drugs must have made you feel happy. It’s a sign that you’re doing the right stuff! You will probably need time to find something else to distract you from emotional eating. Enjoy your days, and you may find the solution without realizing it.
