Article about healthy family meals

We’ve known for years that family meals are important, but I recently came across this article on Science Daily that has some interesting information.  As most of us probably know, having obese parents increases the risk that the children will be obese at some point.  And the tough thing is that encouraging kids to diet or outright discussing their weight can sometimes have negative effects for the children.  So it’s encouraging that some studies show that eating healthy meals together as a family can help with that.  Even if it is not discussed, the children can see the adults making healthy choices, and they’re influenced by that.  I’m sure you’d need to be really consistent with it though.  What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are yes! I decided to get healthier so my children would try to be healthier! I like to parent by “do as I do, not as I do”. Eating together is great mentally too.

I think it’s a nice idea, but it might not be realistic past a certain age. My palate was pretty well set by age 10. My parents could serve healthy food all day long, but I’d get what I wanted at school and anywhere else. Kids are resourceful.

I like the portion of the article that talks about how open communication is beneficial towards developing a healthy body image and behaviors in children. On the other hand, good family meal practices are useful for instilling desirable eating habits.
