Alternative For Dairy Products

6 on July 25, 2018

There is a small percentage of post-op Bariatric surgery patients that will develop lactose intolerance. I love eating dairy products so I’m concerned about this if ever I will develop lactose intolerance after the surgery. What alternatives can replace dairy products?

Most of the major brands offer lactose-free cow’s milk in addition to their standard line.  Almond milk is lactose-free as well.  Hopefully you won’t have any problems and won’t need to change.

Plant-based milk is a popular option. I don’t have lactose intolerance, but I enjoy drinking the soy milk once in a while. Peanut milk and hazelnut milk are some other examples. I think there are yogurts and cheeses based on the soy milk. You may want to check the food for vegan for more options.

I don’t like to go vegan just because I will undergo Bariatric surgery. I know the taste of plant-based milk, but I’m not going to use them regularly. I’m interested in the yogurt and cheese made from soy. Is the taste similar to regular yogurt and cheese?

There are a lot of options for lactose-free milk, but I’m not sure about cheese, yogurt, etc.  I do know that they make lactose-free ice cream.  I have a friend who is lactose intolerant, and he says the ice cream isn’t too bad.  Not that you should eat a lot of ice cream after the surgery, but if you want a little treat once in a while, it might be a good alternative.

I think there is no problem with eating dairy products as long as you don’t eat too much of it. Better to refer this to your doctor because he or she will know better than we do.

As for suggestions, I heard that goat cheese is healthier than cow cheese.

Thanks all for the support and suggestions. I guess I will just have to try out all the alternative dairy products that were mentioned here and see how I like them.
